CatholicVote.org endorses Santorum as his momentum increases after Iowa

Santorum gets endorsement from influential online Catholic organization; endorsement may gain him support from New Hampshire’s Catholic voters.

CatholicVote.org, an online advocacy organization that regularly communicates with 600,000 members via e-mail, endorsed Rick Santorum; this endorsement may help Santorum do well with Catholic voters in the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary. Catholic voters made up roughly 40 percent of the Granite State’s 2008 GOP primary voters.

“Rick Santorum represents our best hope to rally the nation behind a unified moral and economic vision that Americans are clamoring for in a President,” CatholicVote.org President Brian Burch said in a statement. “ CatholicVote.org is proud to stand with Rick Santorum, and is prepared to mobilize our rapidly-growing grassroots network to help secure him the GOP nomination, and ultimately win the White House.”

Burch called Santorum a “workingman’s Republican with a record and a plan which are especially appealing to Catholic voters.”

Burch also said another part of Santorum’s appeal had do with his trying to bring together economic and social conservatives.

“Too often our debates on ‘social issues’ are fought at the margins with stale-talking points which pit economic justice and moral virtues against each other,” Burch said. “The candidacy of Rick Santorum represents a chance to present an integrated approach to voters who are hungry for this kind of message.”

Burch cited Santorum’s character as well.

“Finally, Senator Santorum is a man of honor, integrity, and authenticity.  What you see is what you get,” Burch said. “He has faithfully served the cause of life and marriage as an elected official and as a husband and father.  And while no political candidate, or human being for that matter, is perfect, Rick Santorum’s baggage contains his clothes.”

That last statement could be interpreted as contrasting Santorum with Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. The former has been accused of being inauthentic while the latter has given social conservatives pause because of his marital history.

A strong second place finish in New Hampshire would give Santorum an even greater boost heading into the nation’s first-in-the-South primary in South Carolina on January 21.
