What was supposed to be a cakewalk for Democrat David Weprin in the race to replace the disgraced Anthony Weiner has turned into a nailbiter, with antsy national Democrats now pulling out all stops to avoid what would be a complete disaster. In a move reeking of desperation, the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee on Thursday pumped nearly half a million dollars into the flailing Weprin campaign for televised ad buys.
Democrats are showing the clearest sign yet of concern ahead of next Tuesday’s special election in New York’s 9th District – the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is going up on air with an expensive television buy in the campaign’s closing days.
According to buy information obtained by Hotline On Call, the DCCC has made a $483,500 TV ad buy in the district, starting tomorrow through Monday. The broadcast TV buy will not air on September 11, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
So with 9/11 on their minds, what do these geniuses do? Why, they release an ad showing what’s supposed to be Turner in a corporate jet flying over the Manhattan skyline.
Just hours after releasing it, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee pulled a TV ad set to air for next week’s New York special election.
The problem was an image of a plane flying over the Manhattan skyline — meant to be a corporate jet to represent Republican Bob Turner’s support for corporate tax loopholes — that evoked anger in some corners for the echoes it brought up just days before the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
A still shot from the original ad can be seen here.
After pulling the ad, they replaced it with this weak sauce.
Note they highlight an endorsement from the New York Times, as if they’d ever endorse a Republican. No mention is made of the fact the very liberal New York Daily News endorsed Turner.
The New York Post was not impressed.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spent $483,500; the Democratic Super PAC House Majority, another national group (funded by radical lefty moneyman George Soros), rushed in with another $100,000 — in part for a quickly yanked TV ad depicting Turner buzzing Manhattan’s tall towers in a jet airplane.
Message: Turner’s not just Tea Party — he’s al Qaeda!
One Democrat sneers at the desperation.
“The idea that this race is so close is a humiliation for the Democratic Party,’’ a New York Democratic official griped.
The Republican contender in the race for former Rep. Anthony Weiner‘s congressional seat has vaulted ahead of his Democratic opponent in the polls.
The surprising survey comes four days before the special election vote in a district where registered Democrats outnumber Republicans three to one.
“Republican Turner heads into the final days of the campaign with a six-point lead in this heavily Democratic district after having trailed Democrat Weprin by six points just four weeks ago,” said Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg
The Siena College survey is first non-partisan poll to Turner, a political newbie, to have the lead.
A Republican hasn’t occupied a seat in the district since 1923. This would represent a monumental repudiation of Barack Obama.
To compound his problems, in a NY1 debate Thursday night Weprin said he won’t even be voting for himself.
The candidates were also forced to defend where they live. Weprin does not reside in the district and cannot vote for himself on Tuesday.
“My mother lives in the district, and I’ll be happy to go with her to vote,” said Weprin.
He would not, however, commit to moving into the district should he win the race.
Aw, that’s nice. His mommy lives in the district, but he has no plans to move in if he somehow wins. How inspiring. So why on earth is this clown even on the ballot?
Realizing what a colossal embarrassment a Democrat loss would be here, the far left fringe are melting down.
This is insane. This district is 60% democratic and Weprin might lose because he’s (well he’s a horrible candidate too, there’s no question) a pawn of Ed Koch’s in some sort of power game with Obama? And who will this district put in his place? A crazy, Paul Ryan Republican?
A crazy, Paul Ryan Republican? How cute.
If a final nail needed to be hammered into the Weprin campaign coffin, let it be this horrifying attempt at dancing the other day at a street fair. Absolutely painful to watch.
Memo to aging male political candidates: Never be caught dancing.
