If not, no worries. Barack Obama and his army of bureaucrats will ensure that there’s plenty to go around—of the human variety.
Thanks to ObamaCare, healthcare providers must cover “breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling.” No joke!
In a list of guidelines released by the Department of Health & Human Services yesterday that govern what will be considered a “qualified health plan” under the new law, insurance companies are required to offer lactation services, among other things, free of charge. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius defended the new regulations with one of those Machiavellian statements, which doesn’t address the clear government overreach, but gives sweet odes and happy talk to “preventive health” services, “historic” moments and kittens.
“These historic guidelines are based on science and existing literature and will help ensure women get the preventive health benefits they need,” Sebelius bragged.
I guess government interweaving itself in the affairs of breast-feeding is probably history-making after all.
In total, Sebelius’ department is demanding that health insurance carriers make the following services available “without charging a co-payment, co-insurance or a deductible”:
* Well-woman visits;
* Screening for gestational diabetes;
* Human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA testing for women 30 years and older;
* Sexually-transmitted infection counseling;
* Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening and counseling;
* FDA-approved contraception methods and contraceptive counseling;
* Breastfeeding support, supplies and counseling; and
* Domestic violence screening and counseling.
Now, the fact that these benefits are being offered is not the problem, rather, it’s the fact that insurance providers have no say in the matter. The phrase “private business” means nothing to the Obama administration. You may recall that the President was selling the healthcare law’s “exchanges” as a free market arrangement that would have different insurance companies competing with each other for customer loyalty, which would eventually lower the price of premiums and overall costs.
Except, when it comes down to it, this Administration isn’t allowing insurance companies to build their own plans according to customer needs: ObamaCare arranges beforehand what these “qualified health plans” must consist of or else they cannot be sold to the public.
Some free market, Barack.
Of course in the real world, there’s no such thing as a free lunch (or a free breast pump). Someone, somewhere has to pay for it—a basic concept that career politicians in Washington, D.C. will never understand. Insurance companies will recoup their added expenses by spreading around the costs to… well, the rest of us.
But don’t take my word for it.
Quoth the report:
“Because of the greater actuarial value and broader scope of benefits that would be covered by new nongroup policies sold under the legislation, the average premium per person for those policies would be an estimated 27 percent to 30 percent higher than the average premium for nongroup policies under current law.” [Emphasis added.]
In the end, CBO detailed that individual health insurance premiums would rise by a whopping $2,100 per family, thanks in large part to these new White House directives.
But, no matter. To liberals, everything is free…free…free!
Breast pumps and condoms for all! We’ll even sprinkle some in for those evil corporate jet owners zipping around the planet whom we’re all supposed to hate.
