Weiner Runs for Cover

On Friday night New York Democrat Anthony Weiner allegedly sent out a photo link via Twitter to one of his followers in the state of Washington and has slowly begun damage control. While his fanboys in the leftwing blogosphere have done their best to concoct a fairytale that Andrew Breitbart set him up, it sure seems like Weiner is slowly admitting guilt.

“I’m not going to talk about this anymore,” the New York Democrat said. “I think if I was giving a speech to 45,000 people, and someone stood up and heckled in the back, I wouldn’t spend three days talking to him. I’m going to get back to the conversation I care about.”

He’s hardly spoken about it at all, just to lamely tweet that he’d been hacked and then Monday he began calling it all a prank. He still refuses to deny the photo wasn’t of himself and there is no police investigation yet. We suppose his media support club will do their best to ignore the story, but Bryan Preston  argues his above quote signifies a new development.

But re-read that quote from Mr. Weiner. Did Weiner just accidentally acknowledge that the tweet really came from him? Why else talk about being heckled when giving a speech “to 45,000 people”? He has previously claimed that he didn’t send out the tweet at all. Now he’s shifting to being “heckled” when he is actually speaking (or in this case, tweeting). That’s a very interesting shift — from “hacked” to “prank” to being “heckled.” Or is Weiner likening the hacker to a heckler? One is a crime with national security implications; the other is just an annoyance. Big difference.

Weiner is just hoping it all quickly goes away so he can get back to his usual boorish and belligerent self on Twitter. Check out the video here. He sounds ominously like Bill Clinton back in 1998 when he made his denial about Monica Lewinsky and said he wanted to get back to work for the American people. That really turned out well. Meanwhile, Breitbart appeared on CNN this afternoon, via Mediaite. Quite a contrast in the demeanor of the two. Weiner seems hesistant, looks guilty and desperately wants to change the subject. Breitbart wants an investigation.

Update: It’s gets worse. Behold his televised meltdown late today.
