In spite of a federal law that prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding abortion, you are still paying for student abortions on college campuses across America.
In many of the schools surveyed in the Students for Life of America’s recent study of university health care, you’re paying for abortions through the Department of Education’s Federal Pell Grant program.
In January, Students for Life of America released a study showing that out of the 200 largest universities in the U.S., more than 40% offer or mandate that students enroll in a health care plan that covers elective abortions, regardless of a student’s belief on the controversial issue. Not only that, but Students for Life also stumbled upon another shocking detail: If a student attends a university that offers or mandates abortion health care and receives a federal education grant, such as the Pell Grant, the university could be applying some of that money to pay for student abortions under the health care plan.
Students receive their Pell Grant money from U.S. taxpayers. Using the Department of Education, the pro-abortion lobbyists on Capitol Hill and health insurance agencies across the nation have successfully found another way to force Americans to pay for abortion.
This directly violates the Hyde Amendment, the current law of the land, which prohibits any federal taxpayer funding of abortion. In October, U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R.-N.C.) asked the Department of Education about this issue and it responded, in February, that it has no oversight in place to ensure that taxpayer money given out through education grants is not being used to violate federal law.
How has this passed Americans by?
Our educational system is now promoting abortion on college campuses and helping to institutionalize the idea that women need abortions to continue their education or to fully participate in the intellectual and social life on campus, a myth that Students for Life of America works to eradicate.
The national debt is now consuming the American economy, and yet we are still sending money to international abortion advocates, student abortion health care plans, and the abortion industry’s Goliath: Planned Parenthood.
Students for Life of America has contacted pro-life students across the nation to alert them to what is going on in their student health care plans, and most are dumbstruck. They have no idea. Their parents and alumni of these universities have been shocked that the schools could support such policies and that their tax money is paying for it.
We need to remove abortion from all student health care plans and hold universities responsible for their policies. And we need the Department of Education and Congress to work together to find a way to ensure that taxpayer money is not being used to kill the next generation of students.
Abortion is not health care and should not be a prerequisite for learning.
