Until last June, Helen Thomas worked for the Hearst newspaper syndicate. Sometime during the Eisenhower Administration, she crawled into the White House press room and grabbed one of the front row seats, where she perched for decades, asking increasingly deranged questions of horrified press secretaries.
During a Jewish American Heritage Month celebration earlier this year, she found herself interviewed by a rabbi, who asked if she had “any comments on Israel.” Boy, did she ever. “Get the hell out of Palestine,” she croaked. “Remember these people are occupied. Go home to Poland and Germany.”
There followed a period of thoughtful reflection, in which the assembled Jewish leaders and rabbis tried to remember exactly why the Jews had left Poland and Germany in the first place. After a few nanoseconds, it came to them, and Helen Thomas’ days of haunting the White House press corps were over.
A chastened Thomas apologized for the incident on her website: “I deeply regret my comments I made last week, regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heartfelt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.”
Surprise! It turns out Helen didn’t really regret anything at all. Yesterday, the Detroit Free Press quotes her as “standing by her comments about Israel she made earlier this year.” She only apologized out of fear of the international Zionist conspiracy, which would eat Jack Bauer like a knish. “Congress, the White House, and Hollywood, Wall Street are owned by the Zionists. No question, in my opinion,” she told an audience in Dearborn, where you will find few menorahs burning in the windows.
Later, in an interview with the Free Press, she explained her distaste for the Jewish state. “I can call a president of the United States anything in the book, but I can’t touch Israel, which has Jewish-only roads in the West Bank. No American would tolerate white-only roads.”
Her fate would seem to buttress her argument, since the international Zionist conspiracy sprang into action and destroyed her after scant decades of relentless Israel-bashing. Those guys will erase you, man. It might just take them fifty or sixty years.
Her assertion about Jewish-only roads is more problematic. As pro-Israel activist Don Cohen told the Free Press, “There are Israeli-only roads on which anyone with an Israeli license plate can drive, [both] Jews and Arabs.” That seems like an odd thing to get wrong for someone who spent the better part of sixty years working as a journalist. Thomas’ ugly hatred of Israel and the Jews is obvious. The reason it was tolerated by her “respectable” defenders in the media for so long is that it fits neatly alongside the Left’s general loathing for Israel, as part of the doctrine of multiculturalism.
Multiculturalism is a dogma that insists all cultures are equal. Since this is obviously not true, it is necessary for multiculturalists to drag down the superior cultures, which they come to hate with deep-seated intensity. Their hate is so strong that they become prone to hallucinations. They reflexively believe even the most absurd fantasies about designated cultural enemies. How, exactly, would Israel set about reserving a road for Jews only? It has a sizable Arab population, including Arab members of its government.
The Left is heavily invested in support for the cause of Palestinian statehood, because the narrative sold by the Palestinians is too perfectly compatible with multiculturalism: Western powers conspire with a puppet state to oppress helpless People Of Color, who become heroic freedom fighters. The reality of the Palestinian people is one of heartbreaking savagery. Mothers applaud the deaths of their children as suicide bombers. Disgusting and feral propaganda is standard fare in their media. They even have a children’s show called “Pioneers of Tomorrow” that featured a homicidal mouse named Farfour, who taught children the glories of jihad. He was eventually beaten to death by Israeli interrogators, and replaced by Nahoul the bee, who promised to help children “liberate the al-Aqsa mosque from the filth of the criminal Jews.” He grew sick and died because the Jews wouldn’t let him leave Gaza to see a doctor, and was replaced by Assoud the bunny, who actually promised to eat the Jews, and was taken out in an Israeli attack.
In order to make that look like an “equal” civilization, the Left has to work mighty hard to drag Israel and its ally, the United States, down into the gutter. It’s not exactly a task they approach with reservation. A lot of serious, mainstream journalists defended Helen Thomas for a very long time. She wasn’t really saying anything they didn’t hear in college.
