Comedian Bill Cosby once hosted a television program entitled “Kids Say the Darndest Things.” Viewers were entertained by the hilarious insights offered on serious topics from “the mouths of babes.”
Based on outrageous comments from the mouths of some Islamic sources as to the causes for various global natural disasters, Cosby should entertain hosting a sequel for Islamists.
After the December 2004 tsunami struck countries along the Pacific Rim, claiming hundreds of thousands of victims, people of faith struggled to make sense of it all. But Islamic pundits—both extremist and moderate—wasted no time offering an answer as to “why” it happened.
The Palestine Authority—to which we were providing financial aid—in televised news reports told Muslim listeners the U.S. and Israel were responsible. The “how” question was not answered.
In “moderate” Saudi Arabia, Shiek Fawzan Al-Fawzan—a member of the country’s highest religious body—proffered “why.” The tsunami was sent by an Allah angered by Muslim countries allowing foreign tourists to engage in immoral sexual activity. Al-Fawzan explained that “fornicators and corrupt people from all over the world come to commit fornication and sexual perversion” at resorts in the region.
Later, the esteemed cleric blamed the tsunami squarely on homosexuals. He apparently felt no need to explain why Allah would strike the Pacific Rim yet spare large gay population centers in San Francisco and Sydney, Australia. Nor does he explain why, as only 5,000 of the estimated 250,000 victims were Westerners and since Muslims supposedly do not practice homosexuality, Allah would extract a 50-1 toll in Muslim to non-Muslim deaths for the alleged sins of non-Muslims.
Seeking a link to blame non-Muslims for the tsunami’s timing, another Saudi cleric, Muhammad Al-Munajiid, jumped on the anti-Christian bandwagon, offering it was God’s punishment arising from “the Christian holidays … accompanied by forbidden things, by immorality, abomination, adultery, alcohol, drunken dancing and revelry … defying Allah.”
In 2005, the fifth deadliest hurricane in U.S. history, Katrina, decimated the city of New Orleans. A senior official, Muhammad Yousef Al-Mlaifi, of Kuwait—a country we freed from an Iraqi occupation 14 years earlier—wrote Katrina was a “soldier of Allah” sent as “a wind of torment and evil” by him to devastate America.
Even America’s home grown Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam suggested Katrina was Allah’s retribution for the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
Earlier this year, Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted, sending gigantic plumes of ash into the atmosphere. A Palestinian cleric suggested this disaster, which paralyzed European air travel but failed to claim human life, was visited upon Europe by Allah to punish “infidels and polytheists with fear and terror.”
For Islamists, there is always a common thread linked to global natural disasters: Western values and sins. When one can ignore the science as to what triggers such disasters and the fact they have affected life on Planet Earth long before Western culture evolved, for the Islamist looking to place blame for such disasters at the feet of non-Muslims, the world is his oyster.
But how do Islamists explain the natural disasters unique to lands inhabited by Muslim-dominant populations?
The three largest Muslim-majority populations are found in Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Indonesia—the world’s largest archipelago, situated along the Pacific Rim’s “Ring of Fire”—is an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the basin. Battered by the 2004 tsunami, Indonesia suffered another devastating natural disaster when a 2006 earthquake hit Java, claiming 3,500 Muslims lives. Thirty percent of the entire world’s active volcanoes are found in Indonesia, with an 1883 eruption on Krakatau ranked among the most violent volcanic events in history.
Pakistan has repeatedly been hit by natural disasters—three in just the past five years. Major earthquakes hit in 2005 and 2008; today, a fifth of the country lies underwater from flooding caused by torrential rains. Thousands have died.
With 75% of its territory less than ten meters above sea level, Bangladesh is wracked by constant flooding. Each year at least 18% of the country is under water, killing thousands and destroying millions of homes.
Never mentioned by Islamists is the fact in each of these natural disasters visited upon these countries, U.S. aid and assistance was provided to suffering Muslim populations largely ignored by their fellow Muslims.
Yet to be answered by Islamist voices is “why” Allah could allow such large Muslim populations to inhabit lands so unkind to human habitation. But, the Islamist applies neither reason nor science to explain it—for both dispel the myth Muslims suffer because Allah punishes sinful non-Muslims for which Muslims become collateral damage. Muslim victimization is necessary justification either for converting non-Muslims to Islam or eradicating them. Apparently, a world ruled by Islam would be devoid of natural disasters.
When Cosby interviewed kids on his program years ago, the seriousness with which a child rendered an outlandish response was entertaining. However, the seriousness with which Islamic voices are rendering outlandish responses as causes for various global natural disasters is frightening.
