Revenge of the Coffee House Marxists

When I was a political science graduate student in the 1980s, the Cold War was still raging, and my university was filled with leftists who were pulling for the Sandinistas, the Nicaraguan Marxists, and other various and sundry Communists around the globe to defeat Ronald Reagan and the United States. These folk used to meet in the local coffee house and practice talking Marxist gibberish to one another.

After the Cold War ended, I often wondered what happened to my “Coffee House Marxists.” Where did they go? What are they doing now?

It turns out that a substantial chunk of them have gone to work for the Obama Administration. Were it not for the tremendous damage being done to this nation and to the lives of untold millions of freedom-loving people around the world, one could be amused by the daily parade of ineptitude, incompetence and disrespect for America displayed by Mr. Obama’s cadre of Coffee House Marxists.

No thug or tyrant is too mean to bow down before. China and Saudi Arabia are only two recipients of our President’s fawning. And, “jihadism” is the terror that dare not speak its name.

No leader of a great Western nation is too exalted not to insult. Ship the bust of Churchill back to Old Blighty. MP3s of Obama oratory for the Queen—she’ll love it. The President literally walks out on the prime minister of a sovereign nation and essential ally (Benjamin Netanyahu) to eat dinner. And on and on it goes.

A most recent Obama Administration outrage was recently perpetrated by Michael Posner, assistant secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. In meetings held with the Chinese in Washington, the Associated Press reported that “in addition to talks on freedom of religion and expression, labor rights and rule of law, [American] officials also discussed Chinese complaints about problems with U.S. human rights, which have included crime, poverty, homelessness and racial discrimination.”

At a press conference, reporters asked Mr. Posner whether the new law in Arizona, designed to backstop U.S. immigration policy, had been discussed. Posner responded, “We brought it up early and often. It was mentioned in the first session, and as a troubling trend in our society and an indication that we have to deal with issues of discrimination or potential discrimination, and that these are issues very much being debated in our own society.”

So, if I may summarize—after listening to the Chinese denigrate the United States on a range of issues, American government officials, led by Posner, jumped in with both feet and attacked Arizona in front of a delegation representing a repressive and often brutal Communist regime.

Yes, this is the China that suppresses Tibet, forces woman to have abortions, harvests the organs of religious and political prisoners, runs a cruel gulag system, guns down protesters in the center of its capital, assists North Korea’s brutal oppression of its population, and supports nuclear proliferators.

But not to worry, America, Posner is on the job, and, apparently, he is incapable of getting past his guilty beliefs in a moral equivalence between the most decent and honorable global power in history (that would be the United States) and gross violators of human rights like China.

So, who is Michael Posner? He is a radical and founding executive director of an organization rather cryptically called “Human Rights First” (HRF). “Discover the Networks,” a website created by former-leftist David Horowitz, describes HRF as “an open borders group that opposes all government efforts to control illegal immigration and strengthen American national security.”

Let that sentence sink-in: A man now serving as a senior executive in America’s State Department opposes all efforts to “strengthen our national security” by ending illegal—that’s illegal—immigration. National sovereignty, secure borders, safe citizens: Who needs ‘em, right, Michael?

Posner is a Berkeley law grad plugged into the extreme liberal establishment (he’s taught at Yale Law School and Columbia, virtual rights-of-passage for the academic left). Columnist Michelle Malkin writes that Posner joined with Tom Goldstein, a member of HRF’s board, billionaire George Soros “and other American self-loathers in the failed effort to turn the Sept. 11 Ground Zero Memorial into a national guilt complex to showcase how George W. Bush-era counterterrorism policies were curtailing civil liberties.”

Clearly, Barack Obama couldn’t let such great talents go to waste, so Posner was made a high-ranking government official helping to set American foreign policy.

In Posner’s defense, it should be noted that his behavior was not the administration’s worst. Within days, President Obama, apparently worried about being outdone in America-bashing by a low-ranking State Department functionary, stood next to the leader of Mexico in the White House Rose Garden at a press conference and both leaders then vilified Arizona—and, by extension, all of America. (Not to be outdone by the Executive Branch, the Democrats in Congress loved President Calderone’s attacks on Arizona so much they gave Calderone a standing ovation at a joint session of Congress. ¡Olé!)

One could say more about Secretary Posner, but why bother? We’ve seen these sorts of people before. As noted above, I saw them at the coffee house spouting their Marx and Gramsci. How fortunate it is for them that we now have a President who has given Coffee House Marxists jobs and allowed them to compare notes with their radical-lefty friends all over the world. America’s evils can never be watched with too little vigilance!

Now that’s change you can believe in, even if you wish you couldn’t. November 2012 cannot come fast enough.
