Enhancing the national security of the United States is the core mission of Keep America Safe. The organization carries this out in a variety of ways: influencing public policy, educating concerned Americans on crucial national security issues, and acting as a middleman to stimulate conversation between members of Congress and constituents.
Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is Keep America Safe’s co-founder. She is well versed in foreign policy, specializing in matters related to the Middle East. She has also held several positions at the State Department, managing various foreign policy projects.
Just as President Ronald Reagan was keenly aware of the former Soviet Union’s threat during the Cold War of the 1980s, Keep America Safe recognizes that evil forces will always remain to threaten the leading beacons of freedom.
With the Soviet Union shattered, Keep America Safe recognizes fresh threats that include foes from Asia and Europe like China and Russia and foes residing close to home in South America.
The organization keeps vigilant watch for new threats that may arise any day.
In an age when certain rogue nations possesses the capability to produce nuclear weapons, Keep America Safe reflects Reagan’s belief that peace comes only through strengthening our defenses to effectively deal with foreign threats.
For Keep America Safe, there is no room to treat foreign threats as mere law enforcement matters, addressing these threats in a light-hearted or even naïve fashion.
Keep America Safe takes a don’t-back-down kind of approach in dealing with foreign threats. The organization recognizes that there are misplaced priorities when CIA officers are interrogated while terrorist suspects are given the same rights as Americans.
With the Obama Administration’s handling of foreign policy, the organization has had their hands full, acting as a watchdog to keep the President’s cabinet on its toes.
A recent account in Politico (March 17) noted one such instance, in which Liz Cheney called out Atty. Gen. Eric Holder because it “appears as if he doesn’t know we’re at war.”
Politico had reported that Holder apparently compared the prosecution of the 9/11 plotters to the prosecution of the notorious cult leader Charles Manson.
Debra Burlingame, a Keep America Safe board member also went after Holder: “Comparing the prosecution of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) to the trial of Charlie Manson is a perfect example of why the American people have lost confidence in the Holder Justice system.”
Burlingame has had her share of direct experience with terrorism. Her brother, Charles F. “Chic” Burlingame, III, was pilot of American Airlines flight 77 on 9/11.
She also serves as co-founder of 9/11 Families for a Safe and Strong America and a director of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation at the World Trade Center.
Burlingame works with the Center for Security Policy in issues related to Iran, Syria, Sudan and North Korea.
She said that Holder’s faulty comparisons between Manson and KSM (an actual threat to the United States) is an example why many Americans question the Obama Administration’s seriousness in tackling the War on Terror.
“It appears as if he doesn’t know we’re at war,” Burlingame said.
The organization’s main focus is to ensure that citizens and politicians alike do not lose sight or become desensitized to the war. The group’s website is loaded with content that exposes the terrorist threat, including video clips highlighting threats as well as news articles about activity on the terrorist front.
A section on the website is devoted to spotlighting individual terrorists, allowing visitors to the site to see the actual faces of those who seek to destroy Americans.
It is a reminder that the terrorist threat is real and is grave.
Keep America Safe recognizes that sharp diplomacy is key to a strong national defense, and that the U.S. ought to build coalitions with their allies while standing firm against those who would seek to destroy the U.S.
Ultimately, Keep America Safe takes a shrewd approach to foreign diplomacy, believing that “the world is a safer place when America is trusted by our allies and feared and respected by our enemies,” as their mission statement concludes.
