Thompson’s Announcement?

Today at 4:30 EDT

Former Tennessee Senator Fred Dalton Thompson may be announcing his presidential candidacy formally at 4:30 pm EDT today. A reliable source close to Thompson’s advisors told HUMAN EVENTS that today would be the actual announcement, not the announcement-of-the-announcement rumored earlier.

Thompson’s move may have been accelerated by the August 29 editorial in the Manchester, NH Union Leader that said Thompson’s failure to participate in the scheduled September 5 debate would be a snub to New Hampshirites.

Whatever motivated Thompson, the September 5 debate – with him in it – would be much more important than it would otherwise have been.

UPDATE: Sen. Thompson will not announce his candidacy today. It now appears he will announce on September 6 – after the New Hampshire debate – possibly on the Jay Leno television show. More on Thompson tomorrow.
