Dubbed the “Conservative’s Political Bible,” Gregg Jackson’s brand-new book, “Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies: Issue by Issue Responses to the Most Common Claims of the Left from A to Z,” is packed with facts to combat every liberal argument you could ever imagine.
Jackson, a radio host and author, covers some of the hottest issues in the national discourse today: abortion, terrorism, the Patriot Act, separation of church and state, immigration, the environment, gay marriage, taxes, deficits, school vouchers, gun control, health care, Social Security, education, media bias, and President Bush’s real record of achievements.
“Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies” is organized as an A-to-Z reference book written for conservatives, right-leaning independents and disaffected Democrats. At 383 pages, it offers clear and concise conservative responses and comebacks to almost any issue.
I recently asked Jackson about the book, why he was inspired to write it and what he hopes to accomplish with it. Below is our interview.
Why did you decide to write this book?
In recent years, it has became clear to me that America was facing not only threats from abroad, but was also facing a very serious threat from within — the domestic insurgent liberal Democrats. I felt that the American left was doing everything in its power to attack traditional American values, beliefs and institutions such as marriage, free-market capitalism, federalism, American sovereignty, and the Judeo-Christian foundation of our nation in an effort to reshape our nation in their own secular socialist utopian image. I wanted to arm conservatives with factual responses to the most common claims of the left on the key issues in order to win the war against these domestic insurgents.
Do you feel that your book offers a unique or different approach to conservative activism?
Yes, it finally gives conservatives a one-stop-shop for factual responses to the most common liberal claims. “Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies” arms conservatives with information on the major issues of the day and provides a resource tool to debunk liberal arguments without having to read dozens of books!
Why and how did you decide to separate the chapters in this book as different alphabetical letters and organize the book in a claim-response type manner?
I did this to provide a user-friendly resource tool for conservatives. I want conservatives to have all the answers they need and be able to access those responses quickly.
How did you compile your research material to counter liberal claims and clearly document your arguments?
I compiled information from books authored by renowned subject matter experts such as Dr. Thomas Sowell, David Barton, Richard Poe, Glenn Hubbard, Bjorn Lomborg, Robert Rector and Walter Williams. Additionally, I collected relevant information from studies in peer review scientific journals and non-partisan government organizations. Other sources include articles from the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the New York Times, and of course, Human Events. Instead of conservatives’ having to do all of the grunt work of going through hundreds of documents to be armed with the information they need, I did it for them.
How did you decide which liberal claims to counter? Are there any that you left out?
I tried to cover what I believe to be the most common claims on the most relevant issues of today. These range from abortion, same-sex marriage, taxes, environmentalism, the War on Terror, to “separation of church and state.”
Some that I left out, such as judicial activism, campaign reform, stem cell research, and political figures, such as Hillary Clinton, I am planning to include in the “2007-2008 Presidential Election Edition of Conservative Comebacks to Liberal Lies” to keep readers updated.
How did your job as co-host of Pundit Review Radio help you write this book?
It confirms time and time again why I needed to write this book. I constantly hear ludicrous liberal claims that have no basis in truth. Many of these flawed claims continue to circulate even though they have been proven false for years. I wanted to clear up the misinformation that is flooding not only my radio show and PunditReview.com but also the media in general. When callers to my show are confronted with even the first layer of counter argument, I have found that often liberals are out of facts and resort to name-calling.
Why do you feel that conservatives need help defending their values?
As Margaret Thatcher once said, “First win the argument, then the election.” Republicans who call themselves conservative have become too comfortable as the incumbent majority. As a movement, conservatism has in many ways lost its way. We must get back to basics by effectively articulating conservative ideas and standing on principles instead of adopting Democratic ideas such as the minimum wage, entitlement spending, protectionist tariffs, and amnesty for illegals.
Who do you think would benefit most from reading this book?
I would like to think that everyone will benefit from this book. But I believe grassroots conservatives will benefit the most. There is a critical mass of right-leaning independents who may be socially liberal but fiscally conservative who want to educate themselves. They may not have the time to read 50 different books on 50 individual issues, so in “Conservative Comebacks” I have provided a way for busy people to stay informed on the major issues facing the voters today.
What was your goal in writing this book? What do you hope this book will accomplish?
To arm people with the ammunition they need to defend conservatism from the myths, distortions, and outright lies of the left. I hope to arm every grassroots conservative, college student and politician with the truth and turn the tide in ’06 and ’08.
What kind of feedback are you getting about the book?
Back in June, long before the book came out, Thomas Sowell wrote an unexpected review in a column titled “Explosive Facts,” which was published at HumanEvents.com. I had sent him a bound galley but had not heard from him. That was an incredible surprise and honor. The book skyrocketed on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites. I have also received very strong endorsements from Walter Williams, Phyllis Schlafly, Michael Medved, Grover Norquist, Amanda Hydro, director of the College Republican National Committee, Jesse Lee Petersen, the director of BOND, and a number of other conservatives whom I respect a great deal. Overall, the feedback has been very positive. Young conservatives on campus have been especially vocal in their appreciation for the book. Most amusing have been the book reviews from people who haven’t read the book.
Do you expect to receive any liberal backlash as a result of your book’s publication?
The truth is very upsetting to liberals. They either ignore you or demonize you. If my book is marginally successful they will ignore me. If it becomes a huge success, as I think it can, I’m sure they will attack me and I am looking forward to the battle!
