As he does at least twice a year, Yours Truly (John Gizzi) heads to California this weekend for hard-hitting political coverage of the nation’s largest states.
The California primary is June 6th and there are several hot races the Gizz-ette will be watching: the nationally-watched special election for Congress in the San Diego-based 50th District (Virginia’s Rep. Tom Davis, a past chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, refused to call it when I asked him about the election at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast last week; the comeback bid of former Gov. and presidential candidate Jerry Brown, now the leading Democratic candidate for state attorney general; and the attempt by moderate Republicans and environmentalists to unseat House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo with former Rep. Pete McCloskey, a nationally-known liberal GOPer.
In addition, the Gizz-ette will address such provocative topics as whether conservatives are fed up enough with Arnold Schwarzenegger to "terminate" his tenure as governor — even if it means turning over the statehouse to one of two decidedly liberal Democrats, and the impact of the immigration debate in Washington on politics in the Golden State.
The Gizz-ette’s roving reporter will be staying at the Westwood Hotel in Los Angeles and welcomes any calls from readers (310-475-8711).
