Mike Pence: A Face in the Crowd

In politics, you can generally classify office holders as either Republican or Democrat (we'll ignore Independents since they're really gussied-up Democrats). The way some Republicans have been acting lately, you could break down Republicans even further as either true Republicans or RINOS, Republicans In Name Only. Just watch the Senate's deliberations on their so-called "Comprehensive Immigration Bill" if you need a refresher course on what RINOs look like.

Congressman Mike Pence (R-IN) most certainly falls into the category of Republican, conservative Republican, that is. Pence, who describes himself as "a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order," has emerged with a strong and distinctive voice that rises above the typical din of most Washington politicians.

For conservatives, Pence looks like the real thing. The representative supports a guest worker program for illegal immigrants - but wants to start the process by having the 10 to 12 million illegals that are here now, leave the country first before applying for guest worker status from their homelands. As the congressman describes his plan, it's a compromise, "a REAL rational middle ground." He's also a fiscal conservative, a refreshing stance after watching Republicans of the last few years spend taxpayers' money like drunken sailors. Pence also has a unique perspective on an energy policy, including drilling for oil in ANWR, opining that the House should bring an ANWR bill to the floor every week.

Call Mike Pence, if you will, a real "Reagan Republican" or a "true" conservative. Lord knows that they're becoming scarce in Washington.
