Shays' Democrat Opponent Backs Away From Anti-U.S. Quote

Diane Farrell, the Democrat challenging Rep. Christopher Shays (R.-Conn.) for his 4th District seat, came under fire today for accusing the United States of aiding and abetting terrorists.

The controversial quote — “We have aided and abetted Al Qaida and terrorists” — was circulated amongst Republicans today in Washington. The quote appeared toward the bottom of a two-week-old Norwalk Hour newspaper article that was posted on Farrell’s website.

Much of the story by Norwalk Hour correspondent Adam Kredo focuses on Shays’ re-election challenges. The article is headlined, “Confidence wearing thin in Shays’ camp.” But also included in the article are the candidates’ views on Iraq:

Farrell takes a much dimmer view of America‘s policy in Iraq.

“With the war, obviously we’re teetering on the brink of civil war,” she said. “We have aided and abetted Al Qaida and terrorists.” She called Baghdad “a disaster area” And she expressed skepticism about Shays’ multiple trips to Iraq.

Adam Wood, Farrell’s campaign manager, told HUMAN EVENTS that Farrell was quoted out of context.

“I’m not sure what the context of that quote is or if that quote is an exact quote, in fact,” he said.

Wood said the campaign had asked the reporter to clarify the quote. Kredo couldn’t be reached for comment Monday, but an editor at the Norwalk Hour said she’s heard from no one at the campaign questioning the accuracy of the story.

The reporter may have misunderstood Farrell’s belief that al Qaeda wasn’t operating in Iraq prior to the war, Wood said.

A call to the Democratic National Committee went unreturned. During her losing 2004 campaign against Shays, current DNC Chairman Howard Dean paid a visit to Bridgeport, Conn., on Farrell’s behalf.
