Liberals across the country who have been beneficiaries of grants from the federal Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) are whining because President Bush's fiscal 2007 budget calls for reducing the program's funding by 5% next year. That means the agency, which runs the AmeriCorps program that pays people to "volunteer," will spend $851 million instead of $900 million.
Given that the agency is not authorized by the Constitution, and given that the Border Patrol, which carries out the central federal function of protecting our national frontier against terrorists, is under-funded, why not simply kill the CNCS and use the money it now consumes to hire new Border Patrol agents?
