Abortion is now banned in the state of South Dakota.
The only exception is to preserve the life of the mother.
The Associate Press reports that Republican Gov. Mike Rounds signed into law earlier today legislation that says "doctors in South Dakota will face up to five years in prison for performing an abortion except when the procedure is necessary to save the mother's life."
The law is slated to take effect July 1, according to the AP, and directly challenges the Roe v. Wade, a 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortions.
