Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman issued the following statement on the election of Rep. John Boehner of Ohio as majority leader:
"Congratulations to Congressman Boehner on his election as Majority Leader. This is a good decision for the future of the House and the Republican agenda in Congress. Congressman Boehner is a proven leader with a steadfast commitment to the Republican Party, and President Bush’s conservative agenda. I look forward to working with him to enact a positive agenda and protect our majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.
"This process provided a unique opportunity to formally discuss the important issues within our party, and within the House Republican Conference. In the end, Republican Members of Congress chose a highly capable leader to help guide the American people's business through 2006 and beyond.
"On behalf of the party, I thank Congressman Roy Blunt and Congressman John Shadegg for raising important issues during their campaign for the House Majority Leader’s office. Their continued leadership is very important to our party, and the country."
