Will the French Ever Pull Out the Big Guns?

So, France made it through another night of "unrest."

What is their latest action to attempt to bring to an end nearly two weeks of violence and mayhem? A curfew. Seems a bit late for a curfew. How about bringing in the military?

Ah, we have an answer to that question in an AP report this morning:

Asked on TF1 television whether the army should be brought in, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said "we are not at that point." But "at each step, we will take the necessary measures to re-establish order very quickly throughout France," he said.

I wonder what "point" they must reach before they bring in the military. Or, as Steve’s post prompts me to ponder, maybe they’re afraid their army might surrender to the rioters.

Have the French given up before even starting to fight?
