‘Not Comfortable’:

Sen. Trent Lott (R.-Miss.) continued to show his independence from the White House this week, telling MSNBC: ?¢â??¬???I don?¢â??¬â??¢t just automatically salute or take a deep bow anytime a nominee is sent up. I have to find out who these people are, and right now, I?¢â??¬â??¢m not satisfied with what I know. I?¢â??¬â??¢m not comfortable with the nomination, so we?¢â??¬â??¢ll just have to work through the process in due time.?¢â??¬ And, said Lott, contrary to President Bush?¢â??¬â??¢s assertion that Miers was most qualified nominee for the job, he begs to differ. Lott?¢â??¬â??¢s comments weren?¢â??¬â??¢t too different from what other Republican senators told HUMAN EVENTS, even if they weren?¢â??¬â??¢t as direct. Sen. John Thune (R.-S.D.) said, ?¢â??¬???I?¢â??¬â??¢m not contemplating how I?¢â??¬â??¢m going to vote at this point. But I think in fairness, because we don?¢â??¬â??¢t know and there?¢â??¬â??¢s some angst among conservatives out there and obviously among liberals, too, both sides don?¢â??¬â??¢t really know exactly what we?¢â??¬â??¢re getting at this point.?¢â??¬
