Sen. Evan Bayh (D.-Ind.) will not support Judge Roberts’s confirmation to Supreme Court Justice.
In a public statement Bayh said: “I cannot [confirm Roberts] because so much essential to reaching a considered judgment about this nominee remains unknown. And that is not enough for a lifetime appointment to our nation’s highest court, a court from which there is no appeal, a court that is the ultimate arbiter of our most basic rights and freedoms.”
He cited worries about equal rights and discrimination against women. Bayh doesn’t believe that "Roberts’ statements as a young lawyer must reflect his view today" and too many assumptions are being gambled to speculate what Roberts’ beliefs are.
Bayh said, "He’s an effective advocate for other’s beliefs. The question is, what are his own?"
