Congress and the White House continue to negotiate on the highway bill, with Bush sticking to his demand that it cost no more than $284 billion.
The House approved that amount, but the Senate version is $295 billion. A House-Senate conference committee has set a June 30 deadline to reconcile their bills. Included in the House bill is $11 billion in pork projects. An agreement is no certainty. Lawmakers have already extended the previous highway bill seven times because of disputes over funding.
