The Senate voted 60-36 to confirm White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales as attorney general last night. Independent James Jeffords (Vt.) cast the only vote against Gonzales that didn't come from a Democrat.
Only six Democrats voted to confirm: Joe Lieberman (Conn.), Ken Salazar (Colo.), Mary Landrieu (La.), Bill Nelson (Fla.), Ben Nelson (Neb.), and Mark Pryor (Ark.). Four Democratic senators did not vote. As usual, Sen. Teddy Kennedy (D.-Mass.) put on a ludicrous performance during the debate over the nomination. "Mr. Gonzales was at the heart of the Bush Administration's notorious decision to authorize our forces to commit flagrant acts of torture in the interrogation of detainees," said Kennedy.
