Spellings has never been a favorite of conservatives, who believe she undermined the effort to put school-choice initiatives in the No Child Left Behind program (She has even been heard calling school vouchers "a loser issue.") and crimped Paige's more conservative agenda at the Department of Education.
When asked on C-SPAN in 2001 about Census data that showed a decline in two-parent families, Spellings said, "So what?" She also said in a TV interview that year that she is "pro-choice." Later, however, she told the Dallas Morning News, "I had two natural childbirths and nursed my kids for a long time. I'm kind of an earth-mother type of Republican." She also told the Morning News: "We're here about George Bush. Do I agree with him 100 percent of the time? No. It's not about me."
