Relentless: A Mother’s Lesson In Survival
It takes a winning mindset to succeed in this terrible economy. That winning mindset consists of three parts: conservative values, competitive and enthusiastic spirit, and a relentless attitude.
Why conservative values? Long-term studies prove that all over the world, across every economic class, conservatives are happier than liberals. Why? It all comes down to a belief in the individual. It’s quite simply a belief that you, not government, are in control of your own destiny. Even the liberal Washington Post got it right: “Those who think they can control their destinies are happier.”
On the other hand, those who wait for government to save them, have a very long wait- eternity! No wonder conservatives are happier. We are in control of our own lives. We don’t waste our time complaining, blaming, or protesting. We don’t wait for opportunity to knock- it never does. We create our own opportunity. “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
To conservative values we must add the second element of a winning mindset-
Competitive and enthusiastic spirit. If we’re going to get out of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, it will come from entrepreneurship and capitalism, not from a nation hooked on government handouts and entitlements. It won’t come from denigrating, discouraging, and punishing successful citizens for their success. It won’t come from welfare, food stamps, and disability payments. It won’t come from handing out trophies to kids just for showing up at a sporting event. It will come from enthusiastic, competitive, courageous entrepreneurs willing to risk their own money, to start up businesses and create jobs.
With Mother’s Day upon us, I want to share one personal story that perfectly defines the third element- relentless. It’s the story of the last hours of the life of my mother, Stella Root.
My mother and father died of cancer twenty-eight days apart in 1992, the toughest year of my life. I spoke at my father’s funeral in New York and returned to my home in California only to get a call a few days later from my sister telling me that our mom had gone into a tailspin after the funeral. Only days later, she was gone. But it was the remarkable last hours of Stella Root’s life that I will remember and cherish forever.
The call came from my mother’s doctor: “Wayne, I’m sorry to tell you, but your mom is gone. She no longer shows brain activity so we’re discon¬necting life support. Please don’t rush home. She’s gone. Be careful, take care of yourself, breathe deeply, and don’t rush home. Doctor’s orders. Got it?”
Then, he handed the phone to my sister who whispered “Wayne…ignore the doctor. Rush home. You and I both know mom won’t die until you get here. Rush home.”
I raced to the airport and caught the red eye that night out of Los Angeles to New York. By the time I walked into my mother’s hospital room, it had been twelve hours since I got that terrible call; twelve hours since life support had been disconnected; twelve hours since that doctor said, “Don’t rush home, your mom is gone.” Yet when I ran through the door to her room, I heard the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard: beep … beep … beep … beep.
It was her heart monitor. Despite being disconnected from life support, her heart was still beating. My sister had sat by her bedside all night saying, “Mom, hang on, Wayne is on the way. Don’t die, Wayne is on the way.” Medical science may have determined her brain was dead, but that beeping heart monitor told another story. She’d lived through the night on sheer willpower. Some might call it a miracle. I simply call it RELENTLESS.
I hugged my mom, grabbed her hand, kissed her cheek. I couldn’t stop crying. I told her, “Mom, I love you. Thank you for waiting for me. I know how hard that was. But you made it. I’ll remember forever what you did for me. I love you . . . but now it’s time to go. Your body deserves a rest. Heaven is waiting. It’s time to let go. You have Lori’s and my permission.”
Ten seconds later…beep…..beep (fainter)………. beeeeeep……….flat¬line.
And she was gone.
Medical science may have considered her brain dead, but somehow, some way, my mother had understood. How did she will herself to live all the way until the next morning? How did she know that her only son, Wayne, was on the way? And how did she know to “let go” only minutes after I arrived?
My mother may not have had any brainpower left, but she sure had will¬power. She had heart. And that’s the most important thing in the world- no matter what your goals. All success, all progress, all the miracles in this world are based on heart, on spirit, on will, on being enthusiastic…and on the power of being relentless.
Stella Root defined relentless.
We’re all going to need to muster the power of relentless to defeat Obama and his socialist game plan. My new book, The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide: How to Survive, Thrive and Prosper During Obamageddon demonstrates the best chance you will have to survive, thrive and prosper. That’s how you turn the Obama nightmare into the American Dream. We’re going to need it to overcome the leftist brainwashing of the failing public education system. We’re going to need it to overcome the biased, Obama-adoring, leftist media and the Banana Republic they’ve created. We’re going to need it to overcome $100 trillion in debt and unfunded liabilities. We’re going to need it to overcome the damage Obama has done to our economy…and the massive debt that threatens to ruin our children’s future.
You now have the mindset to succeed- even in this terrible Obamageddon economy. You now know how to not only survive, but to thrive, capitalize, and prosper during the next four years of Obama. If you apply this winning mindset with a relentless attitude- nothing can stop you.
