Joe Biden struggles to separate domestic violence from “the garden variety slap across the face”
Update: The Right Scoop says this video was unfairly edited to clip the end of Biden’s comment, which reads in full: “These are tell-tale signs to say this isn’t your garden-variety slap across the face which is totally unacceptable in and of itself.”
Duly noted, and clipping in the middle of a sentence, even during a pause, is never cool. But the nature of the comment is still offensive – there are a million ways to discuss the signs of domestic violence without going anywhere near language like “garden-variety slap in the face,” even when followed with an admonition. Somehow I doubt the Akinization of a Republican would be halted by the “unacceptable in and of itself” extension of the sentence.
But, to reiterate: clipping anyone off in the middle of a sentence, to make it sound worse, is totally unacceptable in and of itself.
It’s always interesting to wonder when our buffoonish Vice President will finally go too far, and be invited to depart the White House to “spend more time with his family.” This might do it. Granted, from a strictly logical standpoint, it was worse when Biden was handing out folksy “women’s self defense” tips that would result in serious injury and jail time if taken seriously, but it’s hard to believe that even Democrat hypocrisy extends far enough to give him a pass for this. They’ll cut him endless slack for being slow-witted, but this degree of insensitivity will be difficult to overlook.
Courtesy of the Washington Free Beacon, here’s Biden rolling out a domestic violence initiative in Maryland by explaining that signs of domestic violence include attempts at strangulation, threats of gun violence, sexual assault, and other “tell-tale signs to say this isn’t your garden-variety slap across the face.”
Because those are no big deal, right guys? Shotgun Joe understands that sometimes you gotta slap the little woman around a bit, so don’t worry, nobody’s going to get crazy and start calling that “domestic violence” or anything. Women who don’t like getting slapped are strongly advised to stay out of Joe Biden’s garden.
Off the top of my head, I can’t think of much that would be less helpful to the crusade against domestic violence than the freaking Vice-President of the United States musing, in an official speech, that a slap-happy dash of mild violence against women now and then is no big deal. What say you, feminists? “War on Women” ring a bell, anyone? Speak up now, don’t be bashful.
