Shocker: Gun laws fail to pass in California

SB 249 is dead. And that’s great news for Second Amendment advocates in the state of California.

The bill, introduced by State Senator Leland Yee, sought to make California’s gun control laws more restrictive by prohibiting semi-automatic firearms with “easily changeable magazines.”

California already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. The state heavily regulates the sale, transfer, possession, and use of firearms.

In a July 20 statement (“Colorado Massacre Reaffirms Calls to Close Assault Weapon Loophole in California”), Sen. Yee cited the Aurora, Colorado shooting as justification for why the state legislature should pass SB 249, as amended:

“My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this horrific tragedy and their families. These events are shocking to all of us and sadly remind us of the carnage that is possible when assault weapons get into the wrong hands. It is imperative that we take every step possible to eliminate the types of senseless killings witnessed in Aurora, Colorado. We must limit access to weapons that can carry massive rounds of bullets or that can be easily reloaded. SB 249 is a step in that direction and should be approved by the Legislature as soon as possible.”

The legislative branch of the National Rifle Association stated that the bill would force the owners of “hundreds of thousands of semi-automatic rifles, which were legally sold in California over the last decade,” to hand over their firearms to law enforcement.

On August 14, Gun Owners of California reported that SB 249 died in committee.

Sen. Yee released this statement the following day:

“I am deeply disappointed that the bill is being held by the Appropriations Committee. My greatest fear is that another senseless act of violence will happen before the loophole is closed. Despite the gun lobby’s efforts to derail common sense legislation, I will not give up this fight.

When California enacted our assault weapon law there was no intention of allowing such easily changeable magazines on military style weapons. It is imperative that we close this loophole as soon as possible, either through legislation or new regulations at the Department of Justice.”

Gun Owners of California warned that similar legislation will likely to appear in the future. Second Amendment activists must continue to fight against unconstitutional, gun control legislation – not only in California, but across the entire country.

Thank God we live in a country where we can make sure that this Gun ignorant law maker isn’t elected again. In the meantime, we need to keep up the good fight and make sure this Yee guy doesn’t cause anymore damage to our constitutional rights that were laid down by our forefathers to protect us from an oppressive government. Freedom isn’t free! Support your local gun rights organizations and the NRA. Stay informed. Governments that seek to disarm its citizens CANNOT BE TRUSTED!

    – George Washington
“To disarm the people… was the best and most effectual way to enslave them.” — George Mason, speech of June 14, 1788
“The danger (where there is any) from armed citizens, is only to the *government*, not to *society*; and as long as they have nothing to revenge in the government (which they cannot have while it is in their own hands) there are many advantages in their being accustomed to the use of arms, and no possible disadvantage.” — Joel Barlow, “Advice to the Privileged Orders”, 1792-93
“The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed.” — Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist Papers at 184-188″
Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.” — John F. Kennedy

Well, that iddiot needs to be recalled just like Grayout Davis.

With the DHS buying 450 million rounds of .40. caliber ammunition and a sizeable quantity of .223 as well, it is all too evident that our central government is preparing for massive civil disorder and the wholesale failure of local authority. The Feds know that they cannot deploy the military ad a national police force as it would violate what is left of Posse Comitatus after the NDAA was passed last year. Instead, they will deploy this gang of jackbooted thugs in an effort to restore order. As G. Gordon Liddy once said, “Shoot for the head, they wear body armor.

Can somebody PLEASE vote this anti-American Leland Yee out of office???

That is how the Chinese communist came in control of the masses: they took away the guns period. Anyone proposing taking away legally owned guns and preventing ownership by law abiding citizens should have his mental make up examined thoroughly. Invariably he would be someone having an intense tendency to control others. The democratic politicians have messed up California and are naturally afraid of guns being in the hands of their citizens. Remember ,the politicians who most fear guns are those facing the consequences of their ill conceived policies which they had imposed on their citizens through deceit and deliberate misinformation for short term gains. Guns are important to keep the government from becoming dictatorial . Politicians are our servants ,but it is a known fact when politicians become career servants ,they plot against their masters,we the people. We the people need to set limits to their terms. Two terms most ,which would allow them to go back as working people or run business to taste their own laws in action. Politicians becoming career politician should be banned for good ! They invariably have the tendency to become corrupt when they take it for granted that it is okay sleeping as bedfellows with businesses and special interest groups at the expense of their servants ,we the people.

Talk about disingenuous can “Senator” Leland Yee actually believe that his stupid bill will prevent another act of senseless violence? I mean how many bullet button massacres have we had? If he wants to make preposterous claims how about telling people that S,B. 249 will reduce weight, stop tooth decay and balance the budget!

“or new regulations at the Department of Justice.”

One of the few silver linings to Obama’s Regime is that leftist like this person are speaking their minds more openly.

Sadly, (former CA’ian) NO! I am surprisingly pleased that this bill was voted down. The State is as “ProgressiCommuSocialistic” (and yes, I just coined that term) as you think it can get; then it gets even worse! If Independant/Republican/Conservative CA’ians would open their eyes and say ENOUGH ALREADY! and VOTE ACCORDINGLY! they could take back their State, but they capitulate or become complaicent as they cannot change the situation, so it remains the same or gets worse.

Politician: “I don’t see why anyone need to own an assault weapon”.
Me(Us): I need to own an assault weapon because YOU don’t think I should!

They will continue to try to take our guns in any way they can. We have the right to fight back to defend our selves from any one that attacks us, in cluding the government. This is what scares them.

    Let’s analyze San Mateo’s Communist Senator Leland Lee’s tactics;
He gutted an agricultural bill and rewrote it as anti gun legislation after California’s legislative submittel period had ended. His desperation for gun CONTROL was evident throughout his ‘artwork’ long before the Aurora shooting.

Like so many other self anointed State Nannies, Lee tried to pull a fast one and cheat the system, he got caught, slapped and slammed. Now all he does is snivel. Go lick your wounds little man cause we’re on to you.

Americans are alive and well and fighting mad even here in Commufornia.

This bill is pointless and may actually be counterproductive to Sen. Yee’s own objective – because the law already bans “assault weapons” with detachable magazines and it’s not clear that the magnetic bullet buttons the bill is aimed at are legal under current law, as they could be considered an alteration to the firearm if left in place. By introducing the bill, Yee is actually making it appear to courts that they are legal, otherwise why try and outlaw them?

There needs to be more clarification from the courts as to what they think current law means before bothering to amend it.

What we learn from California is how stupid bans on “assault weapons” are because the term is incapable of rational definition, how many times has California already amended their law to close “loopholes”? I’ve lost count.

  • oeblio

Mr. Lee put the bill out there to gain name recognition and further his career. Mission accomplished.

Definition of Loophole: Something that is legal but liberals don’t like.

Here’s ammo for the pro-gun lobby’s: LETs CLOSE THE LIBERAL-GUN LOOPHOLE!! The Mentally ill cannot buy, own a gun under Fed Law. LIBERALISM has been deemed my many org’s as a legally-defined mental illness. Lobby ur REPs to force the FFL ‘Yellow Form’ to add a question regarding one’s “liberal affiliations or Liberal social/political practices”…

Thank the Lord that the people in California have come to their senses

the question always arises, who or what is responsible for the gun violence that goes on in this country?
I ahve been watching a lot of old movies and tv shows and I noticed an interesting factoid regarding the portayal of gun use. There used to be frequent commentary about safe responsible gun use in these movies and shows. They portrayed the same type of message that you might find in a gun safety class. Don’t point a gun at anything you don’t intend to shoot, A;ways keep your gun pointed in a safe direction, etc. They didn’t portray irresponsible criminal gun use they way they do in modern movies and tv shows, where the good guys and the bad guys spray shots around like there couldn’t possibly any repercussions from all the wild shooting. Hollywood is certainly not portraying responsible gun use like they used to 40 or 50 years ago. The difference is dramatic. Watch some old shows if you don’t believe me.

Senator Yee, it’s the California economy, stupid. Another example of the least intellectually capable, but most ambitious, being elected to office. They all drag their knuckles as they reach for the easy, low lying fruit. Citizens are easy to target by the Great Unwashed, Solons in state legislatures. We need a Citizen referendum to require all the nit-wits to pass an annual proficiency test of the U.S. and their State Constitutions. Failing the test would require immediate sacking from the legislature. How did this dim-bulb get elected? “Easily changeable magazines”???? What do they easily change to? Tin-cups for the 99-percenters? Why don’t Citizens pass law to punish Yee for impersonating a legislator? Of course, it’s “C-a-l-i-f-o-r-n-i-a”: any half-wit, panhandler, drug-addled grad student can “easily change” into a “Senator”. Though the vast army of the idiot-elected would cry “foul” it is time for Citizens to demand a threshold level of competency as a requirement to run for office. What did Yee do exactly, besides wipe his snot nose on his shirt-sleeve, before attaining office? God save us all.

  • Andrew James

Unfortunately, Yee represents the majority of morons living in the San Frankenstein area… liberal… ignorant… anti-2nd amendment… hell… anti-Constitution unless it’s in their favor…. thats the type of “Americans” living in his district and he will be re-elected…. because they’re morons.

  • Andrew James

And if you look at the past couple shooters… ALL OF THEM ARE REGISTERED DEMOCRATS… ALL OF THEM.

  • Andrew James

Only reason it didn’t go through as the chinaman wanted is because it cost the State too much money to enforce it…. so he’ll re-write it in mandarin chinese and push it through saying translating it to english would violate his civil rights and blah blah… boom we have no guns anymore in California and the SCOTUS pulls another brain fart like they did with obamacare.

  • az au

Clint said it best last nite:”we own this country”!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chad McDonald

ok so if I understand MR yee he is concerned about spree killings rather than the cartel and gangland killings and crimes that have california’s prisons overflowing, another reason me and many of my friends are refugees from the great incompetent state that is california. Mr yee add up the annual spree killings and compare them to gang killings in california and the rest of the country, otherwise your actions have nothing to do with public safety and are only for gutting the 2nd amendment

  • Magnus Bergman

Ah. Well, in that case, California just needs to close the other Amendment loophole: That loophole in the 1st Amendment that allows those nasty Tea-Partiers to criticize our heroic fuhrer! (Err, president)

  • joe pistola

The State of California is facing the vast Pacific Ocean.
Invasion by the possible enemy (china) is imminent. If american californians are weaponless because of this politicians (idiots) who made the bill to deface the second ammendment then we should mark them out of the ballots. Is Sen. Yee a chinese? Just asking…..the last name people the last name.
