Obama sandbags the Archbishop

At the end of Sunday mass at the church this writer attends in Washington, D.C., the pastor asked the congregation to remain for a few minutes.
Then, on the instructions of Cardinal Archbishop Donald Wuerl, the pastor proceeded to read a letter.
In the letter, the Church denounced the Obama administration for ordering all Catholic schools, hospitals and social services to provide, in their health insurance coverage for employes, free contraceptives, free sterilizations and free “morning-after” pills.
Parishioners were urged to contact their representatives in Congress to bring about a reversal of President Obama’s new policy.
Now, not only is this a battle the Church must fight, it is a battle the Church can win if it has the moral stamina to say the course.
In forcing the Church to violate its own principles, Obama has committed an act of federal aggression, crossing the line between church and state to appease his ACLU and feminist allies, while humiliating the Catholic bishops.
Should the Church submit, its moral authority in America would disappear.
Now, undeniably, the church milquetoast of past decades that refused to discipline pro-abortion Catholics allowed the impression to form that while the hierarchy may protest, eventually it will go along to get along with a Democratic Party that was once home to most Catholics.
Obama’s problem today is that not only is he forcing the Church to violate her conscience, he dissed the highest prelate in America.
In November, New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, held what he describes as an “extraordinarily friendly” meeting with Obama at the White House.
The president assured the archbishop of his respect for the Church, and the archbishop came away persuaded Obama would never force the Church to adopt any policy that would violate her principles.
Ten days ago, Obama sandbagged the archbishop
He informed Cardinal-designate Dolan by phone that, with the sole concession of the Church being given an extra year, to August 2013, to comply, the new policy, as set down by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, will be imposed. All social and educational institutions of the Catholic church will offer health insurance covering birth control, or face fines.
“In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences,” said Archbishop Dolan, who went on:
“To force American citizens to choose between violating their consciences and forgoing their health care is literally unconscionable. … This represents a challenge and a compromise of our religious liberty.”
Where do Obama and Sebelius get the power to do this?
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, signed into law on March 23, 2010, the colloquial name for which is “Obamacare.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America is celebrating the new policy. Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, calls it a “health care issue … based on what’s best for women’s health.” Others have argued that many Catholic women practice birth control.
But that Catholics choose to ignore doctrine does not justify the U.S. government imposing on Catholic institutions a policy that violates Catholic teaching.
Even Washington Post liberal E.J. Dionne, in a Jan. 30 column titled “Obama’s Breach of Faith,” charges that the president “threw his progressive Catholic allies under the bus. …
“Speaking as an American liberal who believes that religious pluralism imposes certain obligations on government … the Church’s leaders had a right to ask for broader relief from a contraception mandate that would require it to act against its own teachings.”
Why did Obama do it?
Facing a close race for a second term, Obama chose not to antagonize his left. Yet he must have known that siding with them meant leaving Archbishop Dolan with egg all over his face. Obama, calculatedly, came down on the side of those he believes to be more crucial to his re-election.
This affront should tell the Catholic hierarchy, if they did not already know, where they stand in the party of Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Kathleen Sebilius. And where they sit — in the back of the bus.
Yet if the bishops will look upon this crisis of conscience, this insult, as an opportunity, they can effect its reversal and recapture a measure of the moral authority they have lately lost.
Not only should the bishops file suit in federal court against the president and Sebelius for violation of the constitutional principle of separation of church and state, they should inform the White House that no bishop will give an invocation at the Democratic Convention.
Then, they should inform the White House that in the last two weeks of the 2012 campaign, priests in every parish will read from the pulpit at Sunday mass a letter denouncing Obama as anti-Catholic for denying the Church its right to live according to its beliefs.
If Obama loses the Catholic vote, he loses the election.
The White House will come around, fast. Rely upon it.

Looks like Obama just lost thousands of more votes. The man is just not smart…

I am with Wayne Peterkin on this.  Ignore the Obama minions in the supreme court if they rule against the church.  Where is the separation of church and state, where is freedom of religion?  Is this a monarchy or dictatorship to force such against the principle of the church?  This is extreme over reaching of the federal government to establish a counter religion or atheism on the general public with punitive measures threatened for non compliance.

Especially since our fearless Crooner has stated he plans on ignoring Congress!

I’d like to see Congress develop Congressional Orders along the lines of Presidential Orders.

    See how he likes it.

  • gotham1883

This is his second attempt to take over the Church.  First he tried thru employment.  Now he is trying thru healthcare.  All he really wants is government sanctioned religion.  Religion that is fair and does not violate anyones civil rights.  I mean there are too many white people gathering together on Sundays and the government just does not know what they are doing.  They are probably plotting terrorist acts.

Maybe the Church is starting to reap that which we have sown. Which catholic university will issue this year’s invitation to Obama to deliver its Commencement Address? Why would 54% of U.S. Catholics vote for Obama in 2008? I believe the President is in violation of the First Amendment. Who in Congress will bring impeachment charges?

  • gotham1883

There needs to be more people of color and ethnicity in the Churches so that the government can control what is said in the Churches.  You know, these white people, if you leave them alone to themselves the first thing that happens is they want to become Nazis.

  • gotham1883

For instance, the Catholic Church needs a black leader, one the government can tell what to believe and say.  Like the black politicians in congress.  I mean look at the democrat party, ain’t no uncle toms there.  They all do what the democrats want them to do, because they want to do it.  I mean, if it wasn’t for the democrats, well, we wouldn’t have welfare that gives those poor pregnant black girls a living once they get out of high school.

That’s only half the story, Pat. It wasn’t only a political decision, but a faith decision as well. The president of the United States BELIEVES in abortion. Understanding the Archbishop’s position is above his pay grade, and therefore he has no problem believing that abortion is a good thing that should be a part of normal American thinking. It is heinous that our president is so anti-life. I hope the Archbishop reads your column and takes up your suggestion on dealing with Obama’s culturally devastating insanity.

So let me get this straight.

You see Obama enforcing the right of people to obtain birth control services, as FORCING them to provide it? Let me flip that for you. If I allow you to post such hateful comments, that’s me now agreeing with your position since I allow you to say it? Or, perhaps, forcing lenders to be honest about the terms of their financial products, is trampling on their rights to be dishonest scumbags?

EVERY. FREEDOM. HAS. TWO. SIDES. It’s obvious that the Religious Right is nothing more than flailing their arms screaming about this action from the side that benefits their position the most. Sigh. It’s the “conservative” way, I guess.

You are a prime example of why the Irish have been fightiing the invaders for, what,, 400 years?  Catholics only differ from Protestants, or evangelicals in that many of them have no idea what the Bible says, only what the dogmatic doctrine says.  That, in itself, does not keep them out of heaven any more that your prejudgement of them will keep you out.  I think you would not do well on Judgement day standing up against Pope John Paul or Mother Theresa.  Even though we will gain entry through Grace rather than deeds, I think they both will have a really good chance.  Now, let us get back on track!

Well, here we have a barfly from Ann’s Progressive Chit Chat Club. To answer your question, my mother is in heaven. And how is your mom?

I remember you mentioning that as a kid, your parents would try to wall you up in the basement to keep you from embarrassing them.  Is this what you are referring to?

  • Emmentaler_Limburger

Oh, for God’s sake – there IS NO  “constitutional principle of separation of church and state”. There is a Jeffersonian principle of the separation of church and state, which is not law. There IS a constitutional prohibition against the government imposing a religion on the people of the country, and there’s another prohibition against the government from interfering with the free exercise of religion. These are contained in the first amendment – Øbama is in violation of the FIRST AMENDMENT of The Constitution of The United States with this action; not some mythical separation doctrine.
Note that the IRS laws prohibiting political speech from the pulpit are ALSO in violation of the first amendment, but is now the mechanism by which they control the religious: shut up, or forfeit your exempt status. Clearly a violation of the freedom of speech and indication of the progressives’ desire to control and/or destroy religion in this country.

As for Øbama and the constitution: I don’t believe they are acquainted with each other. He clearly has either no regard for the Constitution, or no knowledge of it. Since he is allegedly a constitutional scholar, and having been exposed to our great educational system personally, I’m leaning toward the latter…

If they republicans run another mental dwarf with no strength of character, we will be in the same boat we are now in.

Looks like the enemies of the middle class are still working against us.  Lately, Michelle Obama was displaying her Thunder Thighs, steamer trunk size ass and Chicago Ghetto vocabulary on the Ellen Degenerate show for rampaging perverts.  She made the announcement that Obama had made some drastic improvements in the economy.  What she didn’t say that the improvements were bail-outs for mobbed up financial institutions.

Also our Hollywood crowd had a special lttle party of 155 folks over to raise some money for the impoverished Obama’s who have been having some problems affording $15,000.00 a night hotel rooms in 5 Star Resorts.  In attendance were such protectors of America’s working class
as, Steve Bing, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Rob and Michele Reiner and that ardent supporter of old time American patriotism, Harvey Weinstein.  We can all relax knowing our country is in such steady hands.

Well, well, congratulations, Leroy allowed you to access the Internet again. I know  that you cannot stay on it forever, so just to let you know, that everybody in this country is safer, because you are in Fort Leavenworth Prison.

Don’t forget, don’t drop the soap.

Watching a lot of TV in your cell, I gather. Does Leroy like the same entertainment that you do, or are you forced to watch because of Leroy’s preferences?

By the way, you should not have any worrry where you are at, pertaining to the immediate future, you still have 19 more years of prison life left.

As a Roman Catholic, if the Bishops want my ferocious support they should not stop with this recent denouncing which is frankly a day late and a dollar short.  They need to go on the ATTACK.  Openly condemn the moral filth that are Pelosi, Kerry, etc. who call themselves Catholic and go on the offensive against every policy this Administration and Congress has enacted that are hostile to our individual Liberty and the free exercise of our Constitutional rights.  They will not recognize this as real Evil – which it is.  They don’t want to upset or offend.  If you’re fighting Evil and you’re not fighting for your life – then you’re dead.

republican war on unions will have much more effect than the subject of this post.

Mike:  Other than a few little nit-picky things you mentioned, Obama deserves another term so that his plans can work over time.  The economy has already made great strides under his tenure.

  • Mike6

Thank you for your reply. Explain to me why Obama vetoed the Canadian Gas Pipeline which would have created 20,000 high paying construction jobs and 100,000 other jobs.  Does Obama care about the millions of construction workers who are living out of their cars and feeding their children dogfood????? Obama wants to raise the taxes on the rich to increase the 47% of Americans who pay no taxes to 51% who pay nothing so that the Democrats can win the November elections.

Is there anything left in this country the unions have not destroyed? Please inform me of only one.
Just for your information Victurd was not destroyed by unions. He was always a worthless wreck of subhuman flesh

Enough of this shit from “his people.”

Anyone can make it in America who believes in God and is willing to work hard.  My mother was a widow and my grandmother was blind and a cripple.  My mother worked as a maid and we were so poor we could afford to eat chicken just twice a year.  She refused to take welfare.  Instead of playing basketball, I read fine books and I studied algebra and chemistry.  I worked as a carpenter in the hot sun driving long 16 penny nails until my hands bled.  I attended a hard blue collar High School where I had to learn how to fight to protect myself.  After I finished High School, I went to a free Junior College where I took grammer, composition, English literature and I learned how to write.  Later I was admitted to a fine University and received a world class technical education almost for free.

I remember when things got really bad my my mother and grandmother would get on their knees and pray to the Lord.  God bless you and your familly.

  • WisdomandHope

Mike6: please note that Altilla is most likely just being sarcastic – it appears that he completely agrees with you but is having fun pretending he is a clueless, entitled, dependent, blindly loyal, non-working, taxpayer-supported Democrat. Kudos to you and your family for your hard work, sacrifices, and prayers during the dirt poor days of your youth. Much better to be able to take care of yourself than to depend on the govt largesse.

All Christians (Mormons, Catholics, Protestants) and Jews should vote out the America-Hating Communist (Barry Soetero (M) Indonesia or B_Hussein WHO IS THIS GUY?) currently in the WH.  Who you gonna vote for: THE COMMUNIST or The Capitalist?

    ROMNEY 2012

  • Stratosaurus

“Congressional integrity”?  If that isn’t oxymoronic, I don’t know what is.

  • Stratosaurus

I’ve always asked “true believers”, of whichever variety of religion to which they ascribe, especially when those believers run down all the other variants, what would happen when they die and finally meet their concept of God, and He says, “Y’know, you’re ALL wrong!”

  • annmc

The bishops and the rest of the clergy, have been in a coma for a very long time. Long before Obama. It’s like they drank the koolaid,  laced with sleeping pills. I think they overdosed.

The clergy don’t want to upset the applecart. They go along to get along. They kiss Obama thinking he will be nice if they are nice! Well that is a childish notion and they better get over it! Obama is evil as stated above. Playing with they demons is a dangerous game that the Church will lose. The present game proves it!

  • annmc

Romney is another socialist, a RINO! You better pray he is not elected. He believes in Obama care!

  • LaureenHolt

I don’t believe he’s a socialist. His Romneycare is supposed to have been the template for Obamacare, but I haven’t yet investigated the truth of that. He is certainly NOT the radical liberal that we have Occupying the wh now.

I just DON’T see how we could lose w/Romney, vis-a-vis Obummer. Romney is NOT a clone of Obummer.

    ANYbody BUT Obama!

  • jekyllisle

This is what Catholics voted for, CHANGE, this is what they get. The Pope backed him and now where does the Church stand?

There is no one to blame but the Church and next on his list will be Israel and all the Jews
