Gore’s Got It Wrong: It’s Just Bad Weather
Once again, eco-guru Al Gore has issued a pronouncement. His latest “Gorebasm” insists the recent record snow, ice, and cold is the result of mankind’s use of fossil fuels.
On his personal blog, Gore writes, “man-made warming” can “create all sorts of havoc,” including snowstorms becoming more severe. “Snow has two simple ingredients: cold and moisture,” he explains. “Warmer air collects moisture like a sponge until it hits a patch of cold air. When temperatures dip below freezing, a lot of moisture creates a lot of snow.”
Mr. Nobel Prize needs to take a crash course in climatology.
What’s causing this wild winter weather? An atmospheric pattern known as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The NAO involves a mysterious change in the water currents of the North Atlantic. Like its cousin El Nino in the Pacific, no honest scientist can definitively explain why these patterns turn on and off, but when they do, the weather can become extreme.
Now the bad news: The NAO has what we call a “negative” and “positive” phase. Right now, we’ve entered the negative mode, which often lasts for decades. The last time it went negative was from 1955 to 1979. Many of the weather records that are being broken this winter were established during that frigid 24-year period.
Interestingly, those years roughly coincide with a major cooling trend that struck the globe between 1940 and 1975.
When the NAO was last in a positive phase, from 1980 to 1995, winters were overall more moderate and global temperatures slightly warmer. The NAO went rather silent after 1995, and (sans 1998 when there was a monster El Nino in the Pacific) there has been no notable warming since.
But who cares about those pesky, inconvenient facts? Certainly not Al Gore.
“A rise in global temperature can create all sorts of havoc,” Al continues on his blog, “ranging from hotter dry spells to colder winters, along with increasingly violent storms, flooding, forest fires, and loss of endangered species.”
Whew. Nothing about frogs, boils, hail, or locusts.
Let’s snap back into science. Gore’s conclusions have no link to mankind’s use of fossil fuels. This is yet another desperate effort to manufacture a climate crisis to further the eco-agenda, an agenda that includes demonizing the fossil fuel industry, regulating carbon dioxide, and instituting a cap-and-trade scheme.
Keep blogging Mr. Gore. A good laugh will help keep our minds off all this cold weather.
In the meantime, get set for what could be a wintry couple of decades.
