Over several years, Pete Jeffries developed a reputation as a respected Washington insider - first, as press secretary for Rep. Joanne Emerson (R.-Mo.) and then as top spokesman for House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R.-Ill.).

Recently consummate insider Jeffries announced he is headed for the "outside world" - as campaign manager for conservative Republican Rep. Jim Nussle's bid for governor of Iowa. After 16 years in Congress and a stint as chairman of the House Budget Committee, Nussle (lifetime American Conservative Union rating: 86%) is running for the statehouse and faces a stiff battle from Democratic Secretary of State Chester Culver, son of former liberal Sen. (1974-80) John C. Culver (D.-Iowa).
