‘A Disgrace’:

One of the most powerful Democrats in Illinois joined with Republicans to denounce Sen. Richard Durbin’s (D.-Ill.) comparison of the U.S. treatment of terrorists at Guantanamo to the treatment of unjustly imprisoned people by the most evil totalitarian regimes of the 20th Century. At a recent news conference, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley called Durbin’s likening of interrogations at Guantanamo to the tactics of Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot “a disgrace.† Daley was moved to criticize Durbin, reports columnist Robert Novak, “in no small part because his 29-year-old son, Pvt. Patrick Daley of the Army’s airborne infantry, was visiting home.† The mayor’s son, reported Novak, “resented what the senator said.†
